Apple Watch Ultra is on sale today, how to choose the right model
Written by aquitodovale

Watch Ultra arrives on sale today, the smartwatch with which Apple takes Garmin head on. Introduced three weeks ago, the watch differs significantly from previous models (but also from the new Watch Series 8, presented at the same event).

The differences are many and point in one direction: finally to offer a watch that covers every sport, even the most extreme activities, and both on our wrist in every situation, in everyday life, in sport, on the summit and in the depths of the sea. All at a price in line with the most famous competitors.

Watch Ultra: the dimensions

The Watch Ultra case is now only in aerospace titanium and in a single format, those 49 millimeters that allow you to have a slightly larger display of traditional brothers. The measurements speak of 1.92 inches against 1.69 of the smaller Watch Series 8 (41 mm) and 1.8 of the larger one (45 mm). The surface is now flat and the brightness is double: 2,000 nits against 1,000. We add that the increased size will also be welcome by those with an important wrist.

Dimensions go with one “rugged” construction. The digital crown is now more recessed and protected as the watch runs from -4 to 55 degrees and drops without a shot to 40 meters (the limit for recreational diving).

Apple Watch Ultra and sport

The heart of the Ultra, however, is sports performance. Previously, those who dabbled in diving, running and high-altitude sports generally had a Garmin (or even a Garmin) in the technological equipment, now the Ultra wants to do everything by itself.

For those who go underwater, Watch now becomes a dive computer. Thanks to the Oceanic + app, you can dive with cylinders or free diving up to 40 meters and to have an eye on all the parameters of our interest such as depth, ascent rate and safety stops (with the Bühlmann decompression algorithm). We can then plan dives based on atmospheric weather and marine conditions and, once they have emerged, have a digital divelog to share.

Let’s go (running) back to earth. For runners in fact, evolved parameters arrive such as stride length, time of contact with the ground, vertical oscillation and power in running. For those who know no limits, Multisport training detects when we swim, ride a bike or run and automatically switch between them. A wink to those who delight in triathlon or duathlon.

And now we go up to altitude but in safety. The dual-frequency precision GPS, here at its debut, allows you to have an eye on segments, partials and altitude while the Compass has been completely redesigned. While we walk (or run) we can mark the intermediate stages while the “Retrace your steps” function it uses the GPS data to, in fact, make the route in reverse. All this even if we are offline.

The temperature and emergencies

For emergencies we find two helpers: in case of loss or injury, one 86 decibel siren allows you to attract attention while the new satellite connection makes us send a help message even when we do not have a telephone connection. The three integrated microphones, aided by machine learning, promise clear calls in any situation by reducing ambient noise and wind. Also interesting is the thermometer (or body temperature detector) which works only at night.

Autonomy

Those who want to use a smartwatch for their adventures must always be able to count on it and thus the autonomy extends. Basically the Watch Ultra declares an autonomy of 36 hours but Apple has introduced a power-saving feature that reduces the rate of GPS and heart rate readings to extend it up to 60 hours.

If the case is still the same, the straps varyeach dedicated to a specific function, while the price is always one, 1009 euros.

Trail Loop (the first in the photo) is designed for endurance sports. Available in black or two-tone blue / gray and yellow / beige, it is the lightest strap and has a tab closure.

Here you will find the Watch Ultra with Trail Loop strap

Alpine Loop (in the center) is that of “explorers” (as Apple says). Seamless, it has a durable G loop and is offered in three colors: green, international orange and white (called “Galaxy”).

Ocean Band (the one on the right) is meant for water sports and diving. Made of flexible fluoroelastometer (the “rubber” of many marine equipment) it dries quickly and has an extension to adapt to even the suit. The colors instead are black, white and yellow.
