A few hours after the conclusion of the 2022 edition ofEurovision Song Contestorganized by the city of Turinrumors are racing about the possibility that theItaly can also host the 2023 edition.
In terms of settlement, the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 is expected to take place in Ukrainea nation that won the final victory at the 2022 edition thanks to the song ‘Stefania‘ of the Kalush Orchestra. The Ukrainian band won, beating the United Kingdom (in second place with the song ‘Space Man’ sung by Sam Ryder) and the Spain (who was “satisfied” with the lowest step of the podium with the song ‘SloMo’ by Chanel Terrero).
However, as sadly known, Ukraine is currently engaged in a war and, despite the assurances of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskywhether Ukraine can actually organize and host the ESC is currently still an unknown factor.
What Zelensky said about the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 in Ukraine
Immediately after Ukraine’s victory in the Eurovision Song Contest 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced: “We will do everything to welcome Eurovision participants and guests to Mariupol. Free, quiet, restored. Our courage impresses the world, our music conquers Europe! For the third time in its history and I think not for the last time. Thanks for the victory of the Kalush Orchestra and all those who voted for us ”.
Will Italy host Eurovision 2023? What do we know
Uncertainty about whether Ukraine can actually organize and host the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 leaves room for other nations’ applications.
Great Britain and Sweden put forward their candidacy even before the final result of the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 was known, which took place from 10 to 14 May in Turin. Italy also replied “present”.
As reported by ‘eurofestivalnews’, the director of Rai Uno Stefano Coletta he gave his availability for 2023: “Should a collective call for the edition in Ukraine take place, Rai will make available its know-how and the great experience it has shown in this edition”.
The mayor of Turin did the same Stefano Lo Russowhich, while hoping that the musical event “can be organized in a city in Ukraine”, announced that the city of Turin is “at the disposal of Rai and EBU” to eventually organize the 2023 edition in the event that the ‘Eurovision Song Contest cannot be hosted in Ukraine.
The precedent of Rotterdam
The case of Rotterdam it represents a precedent, albeit with different assumptions and results. The Dutch city, in fact, was supposed to host the 2020 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest but, due to the explosion of the COvid-19 pandemic, the music festival, for the first time in its history, was canceled that year. . Rotterdam, therefore, hosted the 2021 edition, the one in which the Maneskin with their song ‘Shut up and good’.
Precisely in the light of the Maneskin victory in Rotterdam, Italy has earned the right to organize and host the Eurovision Song Contest 2022 in Turin. It is not excluded that in 2023 it can be repeated, but official announcements are expected on this issue, in one direction or another. Meanwhile, the city of Turin, in light of the success of the 2022 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest, aims to host the 2026 edition of the EuroPride.
