Arianna Errigo returns to the podium at the Fencing World Championships in foil after eight years. In Cairo (Egypt) the blue surrendered in the final 15-10 to the French Ysaora Thibus, however, putting on the showcase the second silver after that of Paris 2010. There are 9 world championship medals won in her career by the 34-year-old, who graduated world champion in 2013 and 2014. The feeling is that, abandoning the ambitions of excelling in the saber (an experiment that did not bear fruit) and under the guidance of the demiurge Stefano Cerioni, the Brianza is experiencing a second youth. On the other hand, a few weeks ago he had already grabbed a silver at the European Championships: now we need the last step to become lethal even in the final act. It is impressive to note how Arianna Errigo has been on the podium at the World Championships for seven consecutive editions!

The bearer of the Bel Paese had reached the semifinals almost easily. 15-8 to the Brazilian Rafaella Gomes, 15-3 to the Spanish Maria Marino, 15-8 to the Chinese Yue Shi, then the clear 15-3 in the derby in the quarter-finals against the compatriot Francesca Palumbo. In the penultimate act, the Italian won her last thrust against the American Olympic champion Lee Kiefer: a 15-14 full of emotions, in which she found herself in the lead 10-3, but also under 13-14.

The grand final, on the other hand, turned out to be essentially one-way. Errigo only took the lead on 1-0, then suffered the dynamism of Ysaora Thibus, who was able on several occasions to take the time for the blue. The transalpine signed a first partial of 4-7, which turned out to be decisive. The Italian tried to stay in the race, even reaching two jabs late (8-10), but here the 1991 class placed the lethal draw up to the final 10-15.

France therefore celebrates the second gold in its history in individual women’s foil: the first dates back to 1971 with Marie-Chantal Demaille. It must be said that Thibus had been turning around a prestigious result for several years now and it was conceivable that sooner or later he would arrive. At the World Cup she had already climbed the podium twice: bronze in 2017 and silver in 2018, when in the final she surrendered to Alice Volpi, sadly eliminated today in the round of 32 by the American Maia Mei Weintraub for 15-13. However, Italy remains the nation with the most world gold medals on the showcase in this specialty, sixteen.

The podium, as well as the aforementioned Kiefer, was completed by the surprising Romanian Maria Boldor, 136 of the world who today lived the day of life. In addition to the aforementioned Errigo, Volpi and Palumbo, another Italian was also present on the scoreboard, Martina Favaretto: the promising class of 2001 bowed to the sixteenth to the Spanish Maria Teresa Diaz.

There is a fact that must make us reflect, and not a little. In the last seven individual finals played between the Olympics (2), European (4) and World Championships (1), Italy has collected only defeats. The only victory has recently matured in the continental review of Antalya in the men’s foil, in which however the two contenders were blue (Daniele Garozzo and Tommaso Marini). An increasingly worrying idiosyncrasy to gold is undeniable.
