And choosing the most significant one or trying to answer the question of which Ferrari is the most important of all time is as useless as it is without a certain outcome. The only indisputable assumption is another. And that is, that there will always be another one, a Maranello car, capable of tracing a furrow. And the next one is imminent. Is called Thoroughbred.

There is no need to call it Fuv. The fact of being the first SUV of Maranello is enough to explain the magnitude of the shock that the Purosangue will release with its arrival. Ok, the company has always rejected the acronym in its canonical form, preferring that of “Fuv” (Ferrari utility vehicle), to underline its otherness with respect to an increasingly populated and approved market context. But there will be no need to use it. Because it will be enough to look at it, to understand that it is something special.

Large V12 front. The choice to bet everything on his majesty the V12 will have the consequence of producing super-classic GT proportions: the relationship between the first volume and the rest of the bodywork will remind you, not a little, of the GTC4 Lusso, with the cockpit all collected. on the rear axle. An essential extreme to streamline an imposing appearance. The Purosangue will be the largest Ferrari ever: length over five meters, wheelbase over three and weight in the area of ​​two tons. Which is not surprising: the GTC4 was close to 1,800 kg, despite being shorter, lower and having two fewer doors. Stylistic expedients to lighten the car will serve the same purpose: bonnet, fenders, headlight housings and wheel arches will be studded with air intakes and vents, not to mention the aerobridge (reminiscent of that of the F12berlinetta) and a very protruding spoiler above. the rear window. But the rumors of the eve, speak of other unique solutions. Like the bonnet with opening into the wind and rear doors – it is assumed – with wardrobe opening. Special effects that will continue in the cockpit: four single seats, driving position inspired by the principles “eyes on the road, hands on the steering wheel” taken to their extreme consequences on the SF90 Stradale, and the idea of ​​the passenger screen with performance information of the vehicle cloned here with two other monitors for those sitting in the back.

A refined frame. Driving dynamics also promise a low center of gravity vehicle characterization. Built on the new modular aluminum architecture announced by Maranello in 2018, the F175 project stands out from Rome (the first to adopt it) and from the future V12 (heir to the 812 Superfast) for numerous components, from the structural parts of the space frame (uprights and airframe safety), which have specific dimensions and torsional rigidity for the different forces and masses involved, up to the suspensions (apparently adjustable in height), and to the presence of the rear steering axle, already adopted by the GTC4 Lusso.

Prices and engines: it will be at the top. But let’s get to the latest developments on the engine front: the plug-in hybrid seems to have definitely disappeared from the equation and the range could be all concentrated on the V12. The unit, in the central front position, will be the 6.5 of the F140 family, apparently proposed in an unprecedented power step (820 HP), halfway between the 810s of the Monza and the 830s of the 812 Competizione. Connecting it to the wheels is the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox adopted by all the latest Ferraris, in a transaxle housing for better weight balance and combined with all-wheel drive, probably the only one available in the range.

Top price list. The choice to bet everything on the V12 will also affect the positioning. Which will be very high: the rumors anticipate a price list between 336 thousand euros of the 812 GTS and 430 thousand of the SF90. We are therefore talking about a competitor of Rolls-Royce Cullinan (368 thousand euros) and not of Urus (229 thousand). Information that we should be able to verify in a few months, if it is true that the launch is scheduled for the fall.

And the developments … And then? And then who knows. Ferrari is said to be already working on a 100% electric variant, ready by 2025, and on a couple of other battery-powered SUVs (codenamed F244 and F245), which will exploit the same architecture and which they could debut around 2025-26. We’ll come back to it later: for now, let’s enjoy the wait for this Purosangue. That with what it will keep in the hood it will live up to the name – very heavy – it bears.
