Giorgia Soleri, “in the long night, with the tongue, I collect the secrets”: her poems “massacred” by the readers. We asked the poet Calandrone for an opinion: here it is – Il Fatto Quotidiano

“Merini will be turning in the grave like a drill”, “Do you publish your poems because she is the girlfriend of Damiano David of the Måneskin?” Giorgia Soleri has just published “Miss nobody“(Vallardi publisher), her first book, and many on social networks attack it relentlessly. In all possible ways. When she told that in 2018 a poet compared some of her poems to those of Alda Merini, it was almost a sacrilege. Anyone who has been able to meet Alda on her Navigli would know that if she were still alivewould invite Giorgia to have a coffee in his very messy home. He would smoke yet another cigarette with her and certainly would kinder and more empathic words. It would most likely prompt her to follow what she feels. She would also agree that a woman has a first and last name. She is not the “girlfriend of“, As it was presented at”Italian stories“. Even with the girth. In short, she has her own identity and wants to be considered for what she is and what she realizes. In this case for her poems. Good or bad they are.

We asked some contemporary poetesses and writers to comment on her lyrics. That “story of life and poignant love”, tender and ferocious, that the front cover promises the reader. Some don’t even feel like reading them, committed to Turin Book Fair, others freeze their judgment on a newcomer. She is young and will find her way. So she will no longer be “the girlfriend of”. We reach instead Maria Grazia CalandroneItalian poet who published with Mondadori “The garden of joy“And is the author of the poetic prose novel”Shine like life“(Finalist Witch Prize 2021). She gladly agrees to comment on “Miss Nobody”, of which she has read about fifteen poems. She knows young people well because she conducts poetry workshops in the public school, where she reads the texts of Pierpaolo Pasolini, Amelia Rosselli, Giorgio Caproni, Marina Ivanovna Tsvetaeva to the children. “Those of Giorgia Soleri – she says – are typical poems of a twenty year old, both for style and content. And they are quite original“. Which poem in particular struck you? Here are some verses: “NI don’t want to be defended, I don’t want to be saved / I flee protection“. Then: “no tower imprisons me / I want to throw myself into the world / get my flesh scratched / bleed with life / don’t treat me like the princess I’m not / just because you can’t stand / the fighter in me“. For Calandrone it is an affirmation of autonomy in a poetic keyvery strong: “You – he comments – he is speaking not only about himself but on behalf of the girls of his generation. He tells in poetry a new way of living independence “.

And this is certainly not a negligible figure. The claim that Soleri makes regarding the feminine is very interesting for the writer: girls today are capable of defending themselves. The poem cited for Maria Grazia Calandrone is the answer of female dignity to Will Smith’s slap at the Oscars. Måneskin’s “Coraline” response to Franco Battiato’s “La Cura”. In the first case the man protects the woman, in the second she encourages her to face her fears. In short, Giorgia responds in kind to the prejudice of a woman who is fragile and in need of protection or considered only for her beauty. And she does it too in poetry: “For all those times when you / you told me that a man would not want me / because after a naked photo / there would be nothing more to discover / for all those times when you / you told me – and convinced me – that / there was nothing more to discover / in me but my nakedness“. Another of the texts that Calandrone liked reads: “I have seen the sun rise / eight thousand three hundred and forty-four times / even when I didn’t believe it / possible. The ash of the phoenix / that I was / still dirties my fingers“. What does it express for the writer? “Anger and pain resistance. They are the typical themes of youth poetry and the lyrics of metal songs ”.

And on the question of the controversial pairing between Soleri and Merini? “Being so young he doesn’t have a single style. But it is true that in some moments she can remember the Milanese poetess through sentimental inspiration and erotic enthusiasm ”. Merinian verses, according to Calandrone, are for example these: “In the long night / with my tongue / I collect the secrets / that flow from your eyes / quench the thirst / my throat / dry from your absence“. The theme of sex is also an affinity between the two. Alda Merini was one of the first in the poetry of the ‘900 to talk about sex and female desire with rather clear words like “sperm thirsty uterus”. Soleri writes: “Your semen flows / pregnant with you / in every sterile atom / that composes me“. It’s still: “I want to be amazed at you / learn new trajectories to / take you to pleasure / discover new islands makes yours / in, erase the boundaries between the end of my orgasm and the beginning of yours“. Poetry, out of any economic market, is a gesture of freedom. Maria Grazia Calandrone learned this in her tours for Italian schools. “Today’s kids are in dire need of dealing with poetry – she explains – For them it is the possibility of another possible way of being in the world. An act of uselessness outside the competition rules. A counterpoint to productivity “. So the poems of Giorgia Soleri are welcome. Even if they are immature they have their dignity. Do you have thousands of followers? Are you with Damiano David? “This is even more penalizing – Calandrone replies – If she were not a woman, moreover linked to a pop star and popular herself, she would not be aiming at guns with such ferocity ”.

Let’s go back to the negative comments that populate social media on “Miss nobody“. Here are others: “Words and concepts are endlessly repeated in a merry-go-round of banality and bad taste”, “Perhaps the young lady didn’t want to refer to great writers of erotic literature, she feels like a modern Anais Nin but it is only inappropriate and forcefully emphatic “. In the carousel of negative comments there is also that of Manuel Peruzzithat’s stern about Huffington Posthe writes: “At this point one wonders: how do we present those who do not have Cristoforetti’s curriculum but are known to have pudendal neuropathy, that is pelvic pain, and are they actually the girlfriend of a pop star?”. The reference is to his awareness battle on vulvodynia, the female pelvic pain she has suffered for years. Caused by endometriosis. A difficult disease to diagnose that affects many women. But Giorgia Soleri looks great on her own. With a name, a surname, the title of a poetry book. “I am not interested in asking myself if Giorgia Soleri is or is not a poet – writes a commentator – if this book is a brilliant commercial move or a virgin editorial choice from any kind of social contamination. Giorgia Soleri is a woman who has a need. A very strong need. It has a story to tell (perhaps more than one), and it is a story of pain. You feel it immediately and you feel it until the end “. It is a book that she read casually, the first time, and to which she had to return in the following hours, because she felt she had been a bit superficial in ignoring in such a hasty way that feeling of bitterness and pain that, inevitably, was remained stuck on him. This is already a small victory, isn’t it?
Giorgia Soleri thanks in the preface. Here are her words: “Hi, thank you for purchasing this book. For opening it, even just because you are browsing it in the bookstore…. Whatever the reason why you are reading this page, thank you “.
