As soon as the new year started, Google did not wait and immediately launched the new Android for Auto. Many new features included.
With Android AutoCoolwalkGoogle raises the bar trying to meet the needs of users even more. Already available on smartphones for those enrolled in the beta program, the American company has released the latest evolution of what we could define as a real extension of your phone on the car display. Whether the connection is wireless or via cable, the Android Auto interface will open.
It must be said that the software is not a novelty, since it has already been present since version 12. Google has chosen the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to officially launch the interface for Android Auto. On paper, the good date should have been the summer of last year, but due to some delays we arrived at January 5th.
Google Android Auto 2023, what to expect
As the famous search engine and service provider is keen to point out, the 2023 product focuses on 3 key aspects: navigation, communication and multimedia playback.
To help motorists and make searching faster, the company has worked a lot on the maps, making them more easily and quickly usable. This is done in particular through the Material You program, which the manufacturer had already adopted for Android 12, and revised and improved for Android 13.
Through a quick launch function it is also possible to access the most recently opened applications. The new split-screen layout can be scaled to any size. Built to be nearly universal, it can accommodate at least 150 million vehicles.
Among the goodies we highlight the presence of Google Assistant, which offers suggestions, reminders on missed calls, notifications on arrival time, contacts and direct access to podcasts and music.
A special bar for music and podcasts is also being introduced, so as to allow the passage from one song to another, rather than from one episode to another.
Moreover, with the new Android Auto it will be possible make phone calls via WhatsApp. Currently this chance is only possible for smartphones Google Pixel or the more modern Samsung.
The sharing of the digital car key with other people, launched by Google at the end of last year, will also be extended to other phone models. In fact, today it is only supported by iPhone and Pixel devices. But soon it can also be used on Samsung.
While according to the indications provided by the stars and stripes manufacturer, Xiaomi users “will be able to use and share digital car keys by the end of 2023.
To date, this function is the preserve of BMW alone, but expansion is planned.
Android Automotive, what are the new functions
Instead, those who have Android Automotive, and therefore own cars Polestar, GMC, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Volvo and Renaultwill have additional benefits. As for the system, Google Maps, Google Assistant and other Google Play apps will be integrated that can be used directly on the machine screen, without having to connect the mobile phone. Apparently these users will soon also be able to take advantage of the YouTube app.
Among the innovations introduced by Google and presented at CES, there is also the Waze app, now available on some selected Renault models, and subsequently extended to vehicles enabled for Android Automotive services.
The manufacturers they use Google Automotive Service will be able to equip their cars with HD maps. Among these the Volvo EX90 and the Polestar 3.
The newly introduced update provides “detailed road references, such as the presence of obstacles, or road markings“. A sort of help from Google to those who are designing future self-driving cars, rather than embellished with assisted driving.
