Last October, Fiat signed an agreement aimed at the local production of vehicles and the development of the automotive sector in Algeria. It was October 13 and the House officially communicated the signing in Algiers of a framework agreement between Samir Cherfan, Chief Operating Officer of the Middle East & Africa region of Stellantis and Boussoussa Zineddine, Director of Cooperation of the Algerian Ministry of Industry.
The Fiat-Algeria agreement
This specific framework agreement covers a project for the development of industrial activities, after-sales and spare parts for Fiat in Algeriaone of the emblematic brands of Stellantis, which we all know, as well as the development of the automotive sector in the same country.
The ceremony was presided over by Ahmed Zaghdar, Algerian Minister of Industry, and by Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis, in the presence of the Algerian and Italian Ambassadors.
Following this signing, Carlos Tavares met Algerian Prime Minister Aïmene Benabderrahmane. “The signing of this framework agreement is in line with the role historically occupied by Stellantis and its brands in the Algerian automotive market,” said Carlos Tavares, CEO of Stellantis. “The quality of the ongoing dialogue makes us confident about the development prospects of the Fiat brand, which will be ready to meet the expectations of Algerian customers.”
Fiat’s new projects
The agreement concerns the realization of a project intended for production of passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in the province of Oran, in western Algeria. This is what is indicated in a statement from the Algerian Ministry of Industry.
According to what is reported in the note (as reported by ANSA), the agreement was signed after intense consultations that took place in recent days between the two parties. The press release reports that the President of the Republic, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, attaches particular importance to this project given the common will with Sergio Mattarella, President of the Italian Republic.
And he continues: “The project is part of theexpansion of economic cooperation between the two countries, expressed unanimously during the state visit that the President had recently made to the Italian Republic. The signing of this framework agreement is none other than the embodiment of the excellent relations that unite our country to Italy, through which we aspire to extend the partnership to other industrial sectors”, are the declarations of the dicastery.
We had already learned in recent months of the agreement reached between Stellantis and the Algerian government for the production of new cars in Oran. A news that had caused quite a stirand which announced the creation of no less than four new models in Algerian territory.
The President of the Republic of Algeria, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, met with the Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, announcing that the production of Fiat cars in his country will officially start during the month March 2023, it’s almost there.
As stated by the Stellantis Group, production will be concentrated in a plant located in the city of Tafraoui, in the wilaya of Oran, on a land of 40 hectares. The units that will be built in this production site will be in all 60,000, at least for the first year. In the following years the aim is to increase the units produced, the production capacity of the plant could go up to about 90,000 car per year. As for the models that will be made in Algeria, it has not been disclosed at the moment. In any case, it’s almost time for production to start, so we’ll probably have more news soon.
