Kingdom Hearts: “without Sora the numbered chapters end”, let them finish then

“Speaking of the main series [ndr, Kingdom Hearts], I think Sora is actually the only real candidate as a lead character. I think if Sora was no longer the main character, then I would feel that it would be the end of the numbered games in the series. This is his level of importance to the series. ”

These are the words of Tetsuya Nomura, creator of Kingdom Hearts, released in an interview with GameInformer. This is an extremely important statement, especially given that – before the presentation of Kingdom Hearts IV – the public was expecting a new project centered on Yozora and Verum Rex.

In this interview Nomura specifies that the numbered chapters, which are the most important in the eyes of a certain slice of the public, are closely linked to Sora and that the farewell of this character would mark the end of these video games.

It also means that, just like in the past, there could be plenty of room for “spin-offs” designed for other characters. From our point of view, however, it would not be a bad idea at all to retire Sora and leave the “main saga” in the hands of someone else.

Sora in Kingdom Hearts 4

Yes, the Hero but not the Keyblade Master is loved by everyone, even us, and being able to put on his (resized) shoes in Kingdom Hearts 4 already creates that sense of nostalgia for all the adventures experienced since 2002. Nonetheless we believe that the saga has reached a point where it could change things more drastically, in addition to the graphic style and other gameplay elements that Nomura suggested in the interview (such as the fact that the city Quadratum will be a sort of Hub, a novelty for the saga).

In the last twenty years Sora hasn’t changed much but his audience is. Yes, some players arrive later at the party (as risky as it is to do so with Kingdom Hearts, given the way the storyline is handled) and some of those players will be as young as those who discovered that strange mix of Square Soft worlds in 2002 were. and Disney, but in any case a good chunk of players know who the boy from the Destiny Isles is and could be a bit too “seasoned” for this character.

Sora is a classic sorceress / anime sh┼Źnen character: he is the hero who is never the strongest of all in appearance, but in any case with the commitment and strength of friendship he prevails over the villains. He is a character who, despite showing some moments of weakness, is always cheerful and sunny, ready to help. It’s something everyone needs from time to time but, after all these games and the conclusion of the Dark Seeker Saga, something different wouldn’t have hurt, especially if more multifaceted.

Let’s be clear, Kingdom Hearts 4 might surprise us. It seems that Sora will be far from the places known to him and separated from his old friends, so he could be forced to “grow up” suddenly.

In our opinion, however, Kingdom Hearts is so powerful as a franchise that it no longer really needs to advance with the numbers. That 4 is not what interests the public and Sora is not so fundamental, especially considering that the beginning of a new saga would have easily allowed to shift the attention to new characters, since those already known have received good or bad. a definitive conclusion.

What do you think? Can Sora be the protagonist forever?
