Mercedes S-Class AMG: new hybrid, high performance
Written by aquitodovale

A long awaited return. More than 50 years after the first generation, Mercedes-Benz is launching a new version of the AMG S 63a luxury sedan with a decidedly sporty soul from the Stuttgart company.

And innovative too: the Mercedes-AMG S 63 is equipped with a electric power train which gives even more power and a full-electric range useful for getting around the centers and restricted traffic areas of large Italian and European cities. Indeed, the flagship of the German manufacturer combines the AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine with the AMG-specific hybrid powertrain and a new, more powerful version of the AMG High Performance battery. The AMG S63 E-PERFORMANCE thus sets new standards in the luxury sedan segment.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-PERFORMANCE: new shape for power

Under the hood of the AMG S 63 E-PERFORMANCE there is room for the same powertrain as the AMG GT 63s, powered however by a more powerful and capacious battery pack. A technical and technological configuration that allows you to develop a total power of 820 horsepower and a torque of 1,430 Nm. Characteristics that allow the AMG S 63 E-PERFORMANCE to sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 250 km/h (electronically limited speed).

Whoever sits behind the wheel can then decide how to dose this power by choosing one of the seven driving modes available: Electric, Comfort, Battery Hold, Sport, Sport+, Slippery and Individual. In Electric mode, the maximum speed is limited to 140 km/h, so as to optimize consumption and maximize range. The Sport and Sport+ modes are those that guarantee the best performance: endothermic and electric are always active, allowing you to make the most of the power of the hybrid powertrain.

Formula 1 battery

The experience accumulated over the last few years in the Formula 1 Circus has allowed the Affalterbach technicians to develop ad hoc technologies for the hybrid powertrain battery. The new HPB 150 accumulator it is an evolution of the one already used on the AMG GT 63 SE Performance, with increased capacity and capable of ensuring greater range. In full-electric mode, the AMG S 63 E-PERFORMANCE is capable of covering 33 kilometers, ensuring a constant level of performance in extreme use.

Instantly recognisable

The collaboration between the engineers of the House of Stuttgart and those of the House of Affalterbach is also noticeable in the design of the exterior. For the first time ever, the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-PERFORMANCE features the AMG-specific front grille with vertical “Panamericana” slats and the Affalterbach logo on the bonnet.

The bumper has instead been redesigned following the style of the latest AMG models launched on the market, with two generous air intakes on the sides. The AMG signature is also visible at the rear, where there are four trapezoidal exhausts. Rounding out the AMG exterior package are the AMG-specific alloy wheels.

The hand of the Affalterbach designers is also visible inside the cabin, albeit to a lesser extent. Personalization is about i leather seats, with stitching and dedicated logos; and the dashboard, where the exclusive AMG steering wheel borrowed from the world of motorsport finds space.

Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-PERFORMANCE, availability and prices

At the moment, the new luxury sedan from the Stuttgart company has only been announced to the press, without providing further details on availability and prices. However, it is probable that the Mercedes-AMG S 63 E-PERFORMANCE will be put on the market in the first half of 2023, with a list price of more than 120 thousand euros (entry price of the “normal” S-Class).
