MESTRE – If the shops suffer in the center, not even in the commercial galleries is toasted to champagne. Indeed, the crisis, the pandemic and, in the case of Mestre, also the excess supply between hypermarkets and commercial areas that have grown in the last two decades, also puts a strain on structures that – vox populi – would be partly responsible for the massacre of menstrual activity. An example? The upper floor of the Doors of Mestrefor almost half the surface sadly desertified, but also the year and a half of waiting for the Ship de Vero of Marghera where only now, after the closure of the Coop in the spring of 2021, is work being done for the arrival of Primark, the low-priced Irish clothing brand adored by young people.
Shopping centers, new interventions against the crisis: Primark lands at the Nave de Vero
Just go up the escalators of the shopping center in via don Tosatto to realize the situation. In the entire wing where once there was the upper floor of the was Auchan only the Feltrinelli bookshop and little else remained. The entire catering area of Officine Italia (but also the Japanese restaurant at the main entrance) have never reopened, sealed by plasterboard panels which, despite being colored, do not change the desolation effect of the whole. The same goes for the next gallery, not to mention the entire surface above the Conad: all closed, with the bookshop now out of the loop of the center-goers and populated only by customers who know it. “But there are news on the way, and within a couple of months we will present the project – explains Antonio Impedovo, director of the Porte di Mestre shopping mall -. The shops that remained in this wing of the center have been temporarily moved to other spaces, and the same will happen for Feltrinelli because this whole part of the upper floor will be renovated to make room for shops, services and restaurants. We hope to complete part of the work by Christmas ». An operation that is also explained as a response to a crisis that also affects structures like these, but which is not seen as a fall in the appeal of the commercial area between Zelarino and Terraglio. “Proof? – resumes the director of Porte di Mestre – If Lando has opened in this area and now Bricoman will arrive despite the proximity of the Obi, this speaks volumes about the potential of this area. Of course, for shopping centers like ours, we need to move towards a mix of offer that is not limited to hypermarkets and clothing, but which also looks at services. The presence of a veterinary clinic here is an example: what other centers have a similar structure? ».
Certainly, therefore, it is not an easy period even for shopping centers. But the fact that investments are made to rethink the product is at least a sign of confidence in the future. And also in the other shopping mall on the mainland, works are underway that will continue throughout the summer, with the aim of reopening a substantial portion of the commercial area in the autumn. At the Ship de Vero in fact, Primark is about to land in the former Coop space, an agreement that concerns this shopping center and the others managed by Klépierre. Primark offers clothing and household items at competitive prices and, so far, in Veneto has only one store in Verona. Unlike what has been announced in the past, Primark will stop only on the ground floor, without expanding to the upper one where Shoes & Shoes should remain, but next to it the MediaWorld space has been reduced to make room for the new brand’s warehouses. A resizing similar to that of the Terraglio MediaWorld. Because now everyone is suffering, even the large electronics chains.
