In an interview with Corriere della Sera, Rafael Leao told himself and talked about many topics: from football, to friendship, to video games, to music and more.
On technology: “My daily life is a natural mix of real and digital, yesIt is you non-digital natives who always ask yourself the problem. My mom calls me every day, for example. Although she often just wants to know if I ate well. The PlayStation is certainly one of my hobbies and during the lockdown I also played a digital derby against an Inter player, a way to stay close to the fans in a difficult moment in everyone’s life. And certainly eSports are a rapidly developing trend and a market that can still grow a lot in the coming years. However, I believe that the emotions that an event such as a real, live football match gives are incomparable“.
On music: “I really enjoy rapping and I think that when I finish my football career I could do that, in life. For now it’s just a pastime: I trap, but I speak above all of my life, of the sacrifices to get here. Thoughts that I also share with Cabral, a permanent presence in my life.
On friendship: “Here you are, friendship is another very important value, even in what you do: in football I have many friends, in Milan and also in other teams. This creates group, unity of purpose and also of values. And I am proud to be in a club that is very attentive to social responsibility issues, which has done so much to promote fairness, equality and inclusivity through the positive examples of sport.“.
About the family: “For me, family is the most important thing. What I do on the pitch I want to pass on to them, I want to do well for them. The relationship with my mom is special, I have already told you: she calls every day to find out how I am. My dad is a different person, he wants me to do the right things. I am very attached, and with the first salary I immediately bought the house for them
On the nickname: “My real worth is something else. God gave me talent and I have to be grateful and keep working hard so as not to waste it. My nickname way 45? Many people ask me: 45 is the postcode of my region in Portugal, while Way is the way, so it’s a bit of a connection between my origins and the path I’m walking on. The Barrio de Jamaica, where I was born, is everything to me: that’s where I started playing, where I have my family, my friends, the most important people. It is my heart“.
The numbers on social networks: “It is an honor to be an example for younger people who maybe follow me because of my way of being or because they like the content I post. But I’m a footballer, a striker and therefore the numbers that make me happiest are those on the pitch“.
On the fans: “Football without fans is something else, there is nothing else to add. This year at San Siro more than a million people came to support us, regardless of how many times away it was like playing at home: in Reggio Emilia, in the decisive match, seemed to be in Milan. And then the tide of people who greeted us on our return to the city and the next day in the parade with the bus uncovered. No, the feelings you get in real life are something else“.
