It became the most expensive classic car in history, the 1955 Mercedes SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold for 135 million euros during a “secret” auction at Sotheby’s in a private hall of the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart. This is the highest price ever paid for a car. The car, named after the engineer Rudolf Uhlenhaut in 1955, is one of only two examples produced, which now enters the private collection of a buyer who prefers to remain anonymous.

It had been a week that rumors of the record result of a secret auction by RM Sotheby’s had been chasing each other, but confirmation from the English auction house has only arrived in these hours. In the armored event on May 5, organized at the company’s museum, one of the two built examples of the 1955 Mercedes-Benz Uhlenhaut Coupé was sold to a collector for 135 million euros, making it the most expensive car of history. “The Uhlenhaut Coupé is a milestone in the development of sports cars and one of the important historical cornerstones of our brand,” explains Ola Källenius, chairman of the Mercedes board. The car, restored by specialist Tony Merrick in 1986, remains a masterpiece of engineering and innovative technology for motorsport of the 1950s, instantly becoming the world’s fastest road car when new, capable of a speed of 290 km / h. The second of the Mercedes-Benz Uhlenhaut produced will remain in the hands of Mercedes and will be exhibited at the Stuttgart museum.

“History has been made and with this auction the Mercedes 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé literally destroyed the previous record of 45 million 250 GTOs – comments Duccio Lopresto, director of business development at RM Sotheby’s – a magical, incredible, almost mystical evening. In a private room of the Mercedes Museum in Stuttgart we organized a totally secret auction, the most important car auction ever: there were only about 15 people in the room, no one outside could know what was happening – continues Duccio Lopresto – and at the end the most iconic and legendary car in history was auctioned for a staggering sum, with a magnificent performance by auctioneer Ollie Barker and perfect organization by the RM Sotheby’s team. ” The proceeds from the sale will be used for a global scholarship program Mercedes-Benz Fund: “The project – says the head of Mercedes-Benz Ola Källenius – aims to encourage young people to develop new technologies, in particular for decarbonisation and conservation of resources “.
