Marcato’s team dominated the Lanfranchi final and won the Scudetto
Top 10: Petrarch champion of Italy! Rovigo defeated 19-6 (Ph. Luca Sighinolfi)
Petrarca is champion of Italy. After a game managed with great clarity, Marcato’s team won the title by beating Rovigo 19-6. The defense, once again, was the key to the success of the new Italian champions, who concluded the Lanfranchi match without taking goals and above all by granting very few opportunities to the opponents. Coetzee’s team managed to impose itself only in an orderly scrum, but it was not enough to straighten out a game that immediately seemed to be in the hands of Petrarca.
The chronicle
Petrarca starts strong. Faiva puts pressure on the rossoblù defense with a 50:22 kick, and in the first 10 minutes the rossoblùs are repeatedly forced to overtime in defense. Marcato’s team relies, as expected, on the forwards, to then trigger Zini and above all a very inspired Pama Fou at the right moment.
At 9 ′ Petrarch earns a free kick at 5 meters, gives up the posts and goes to a lineout: the choice does not pay, because Tebaldi collects the ball from the maul and attacks in first person, but is tackled and taken out. After 10 minutes in the trench, Rovigo finds breath thanks to the orderly scrum, but without being able to return to the opposing half of the field. At 15 ‘Lyle transforms a naive foul by Chillon into points, for the 3-0.
At 17 ‘Petrarca touches the heavy marking: Lyle’s cross kick, Trotta anticipates Da Re and puts the ball back into play for Nostran, the Petrarchian multiphase is insistent but thwarted by a lost ball forward just a short distance from the goal line. Rovigo suffers a lot, and he clings to the orderly melee to hold on and put some pressure on a Petrarch who – despite playing the game – is unable to take off.
At 22 ′ Coetzee’s team realizes the first chance of his match, with Da Re scoring the 3-3 football. The match flows with Petrarca in possession of the ball and always on the attack, and at 32 ‘he returns to the lead with Lyle’s penalty. The rossoblù respond immediately, they choose not to place an easy kick and go to play a touch at 5 meters, however, nullifying everything with a wrong throw.
At the beginning of the second half Van Reenen restores the score at 6-6, but at the first opportunity Petrarca strikes: a great break by Spanish who arrives very short, Tebaldi replays the ball off with a nice pass on Nostran who has the way to dive into half. Lyle transforms from difficult position: 13-6.
Coetzee changes the front line as a whole by inserting Momberg, Quaglio and Pomaro. Petrarch, however, continues to put pressure, pitching his tents in the rossoblù half. At 57 ′ Lyle extends the score beyond the break with a penalty shortly after 10 meters.
On the developments of a maul, Galetto commits an ingenuity, going to touch the ball while Chillon is picking it up from the back of the drive, taking the yellow card. Despite the numerical inferiority, Marcato’s team continues to push. A big hole by Broggin brings back the action in Rovigo’s 22, forced to make a foul: Lyle hits the posts for 19-6.
Rovigo manages with difficulty to free himself from the furious pressure of Marcato’s boys, and thanks to Ferrario first and Ruggeri then he gets back into the 22 opponents, but the action ends with nothing. We are back in numerical parity, and the defense of Petrarch defuses the last attacks of Rovigo. It ends 19-6, and Petrarca – after the disappointment of last year – can celebrate the Italian title
