In the last round of the league, Benetton crashes the Welsh: game closed in the first half, still 29 points scored by Rhyno Smith after the derby won with the Zebre. Among others, the blue captain Lamaro, Pettinelli, Ruzza and the young Lorenzo Cannone
Benetton Rugby closed their season with a flourish by defeating Cardiff 69-21 and conquering thirteenth place in the United Rugby Championship at the expense of the Welsh. For the second consecutive week a dominant performance by Treviso and, again for the second consecutive time, 29 points scored by Rhyno Smith, author of two tries, eight transformations and a placed. In the match between disappointed by the Urc, the lions close the case in forty minutes, going to the interval with a 31-7 lead. The Blues’ attempt to comeback in the first minutes of the second fraction, easily controlled by the green-and-whites, who immediately resumed grinding the game, was in vain. Space also for the greetings to Irnè Herbst and Callum Braley, the last presence with Treviso. There are many positive indications from a season marked by ups and downs, which ended with only six victories and many regrets. But if this is the beginning of the journey with Marco Bortolami, Benetton can look to the future with confidence.
Treviso is the first to hit, taking advantage of the maul that has given so much satisfaction during the year: Cannone comes off at the right time and unhinges the opposing defense by marking the first goal of the evening, transformed by Smith. Three turns of hands and Benetton doubles with Albornoz. Bellini collects the oval from the kick of the Argentine opening and the fake penetrating do the rest, leaving a prairie right in Albornoz for the 14-0. At 20 ‘, the third scoring of the lions with captain Lamaro, still on the development of a throw-in: Ruzza receives offload and serves the third line in offload straight towards the posts for the 21-0. While Cardiff struggles to find the right offensive geometries to get into the game, Treviso continues to rage, first with Smith’s foot, then with Braley’s dive valid for 31-0. Two fouls in quick succession allow the Blues to enter the 22 of Treviso for the first time, immediately collecting seven points thanks to the excessive physical power of Carrè and the transformation of Priestland.
The beginning of the second half is all of the Blues brand, eager to redeem the bad first half. Also on this occasion, it is Benetton’s indiscipline that allows opponents to gain meters and to find another seven points, again the result of a head down charge with Carrè. In the best moment of Cardiff it is still Treviso to strike with Albornoz’s second personal goal, favored by an excellent reading by Braley, author of the 43-14 goal a few minutes later. After the 43-21 scored by Ben Thomas, Treviso is rampant. Smith, Ruzza, Pettinelli and again the extreme South African complete Monigo’s party by fixing the score at 69-21, the second best win for Benetton since the beginning of the Celtic League era. Having laid the foundations, all that remains is to wait for the start of next season to see where this Treviso can go.
