The match report
The first important moment is at 1-1: Isner reaches 13,729 aces in his career, surpassing the already monstrous Ivo Karlovic, one who at Wimbledon caused the elimination of Lleyton Hewitt in the first round in 2003 with the Australian champion and then went on into his forties. Fundamentally, however, it is Sinner more who annoys Isner than the other way around: a forehand recovery, a backhand one and at 2-2 there is already a break point. Even on 3-3 comes the chance through the forehand, but this time it is exploited without fuss. The South Tyrolean never gets into troubleon the contrary, he also shows off some small pearls like a great short ball at 5-4 15-0, and takes the set home with a comfortable 6-4.
Second set more balanced than the first, at least if you go to see the fact that up to the tie-break both keep their respective turns of service. There is never, in reality, a particularly peaceful game for the two, with the exception of that of 5-5 held at zero by Sinner. Ultimately, everything is decided on the reverse with which the South Tyrolean enters the field and earns the 3-2 with minibreak, which then in fact converts into 7-4 (with a thrill at 5-4 for Isner’s just wide response on the second) which ensures him the double advantage.
At that point the blue plays much more relaxed, without having particular things to fear. For Sinner it is just a matter of keeping the batting rounds calmly, which he does by never allowing break points throughout the entire match. The decisive moment arrives at 4-3, when Jannik basically uproots the certainties at Isner’s bar and, in a few minutes, he goes to take the completion of the collection of eighth Grand Slams.
What a number of Sinner: super damped, Rublev overspeed
