Tesla raised prices: how much does Model 3 cost today
Written by aquitodovale

Elon Musk’s car company promised an affordable electric car for everyone, but it is still a long way from the result and, now, even the base Model 3 is really for a few

That Elon Musk’s promise to transform Tesla into the car manufacturer that would bring the electric car “for everyone” to the market ran aground (pretty) pretty much everybody noticed it, when Musk himself failed his promise in promise: to launch a $ 35,000 Tesla Model 3. That car actually arrived in March 2019, but only in the US, only if bought online and only lasted on the market for a very short time.

Then, with Covid-19, the lockdowns and the logistics crisis of 2020, that price was lost track until, in April 2022, Musk himself on Twitter had to admit: “Tesla and SpaceX are seeing the recent and significant inflation pressure on raw materials and logistics “. Translated: goodbye dream of the economic Tesla, at least for a while. Indeed: prices go up and even a lot both in the US and in the rest of the world and, now, also in Italy. Tesla, in fact, has also revised the list in our country, where among other things at the moment it only sells Model 3 and Model Y.

The cheapest Tesla of all, in Italy and in the rest of the world, is the rear-wheel drive Tesla Standard Range, therefore with a single engine and a declared autonomy of 491 kilometers in the Wltp cycle. This car, today, costs 57,490 euros, compared to the 54,990 euros it cost in April, when Musk had smelled an increase in sight. This is an increase in the price of exactly 2,500 euros and no, it is not a speculation caused by state incentives for electric cars because the Tesla Model 3 costs well over the 35,000 euros plus maximum VAT allowed for eco-incentives.

The new price, therefore, is a market price that will remain for several months, net of further increases. And it is a very similar price, to make a comparison, to the starting price of the BMW 5 Series sedan diesel: the 518d, in fact, today starts at 57,500 euros, practically as much as the rear-wheel drive Model 3 Standard with the new price.

It also grows in the price of the second Tesla on sale in Italy, the Model Y which is nothing but the electric SUV derived from the Model 3. Tesla Model Y is available, in Italy, in two versions: the Model Y Long Range (533 km of autonomy, 217 km / h of maximum speed and 0-100 per hour in 5 seconds), and the Model Y Performance (514 km of autonomy, 250 km / h of maximum speed and 0-100 per hour in 3.7 seconds). The price of the first now rises to 65,990 euros, while that of the second one to 71,990 euros.

Once again, we are very close to the price of a very well-known premium model in the thermal world: the diesel-powered BMW X5 xDrive 25d, in fact, has a starting base price only a little higher: 72,600 euros. The problem, however, is that at least in theory Model 3 and Model Y should compete with BMW 3 Series and X3 and not with 5 Series and X5 which, at best, should be compared to Model S and Model X. This, unfortunately, demonstrates how much the price equivalence between an electric car and an equivalent thermal competitor is still far away, which in practice is the real promise made by Musk at the time.

In all this, we also remember that Tesla has officially put aside, at least for the moment, the market launch of a $ 25,000 budget model. The so-called “Model 2”, in fact, will not be made shortly by the admission of Elon Musk himself who, with the usual tweet, admitted in January that Tesla has too many projects to develop at the moment to even think of a $ 25,000 EV.
