Mercedes presents the exclusive hypercar with hybrid drive AND PERFORMANCE and total power that exceeds 1,000 hp, an extraordinary vehicle, inspired by racing cars. The AMG brand of the house was born in 1967 and therefore turns 55 today: on the occasion of this important anniversary, the high-performance sports car brand launches a vehicle never seen before.
The Mercedes-AMG ONE is born
A new two-seater super sports car made by the AMG “racing car” division, which moves from racing circuits to the road and for the first time in the world transfers the most modern and efficient Formula 1 hybrid technology from racing to everyday driving. A new hybrid model which, with its internal combustion engine and four electric motors, it delivers 782 kW (1,063 hp) of total power and reaches the maximum speed of 352 km / h (limited). The development phase was followed by Mercedes with the help of Formula 1 experts from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains from Brixworth. The Mercedes-AMG ONE can be seen in action for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, June 23-26, 2022.
Not only the hybrid drive AND Formula 1 PERFORMANCE, the rest of the technology is too inherited directly from motorsport: Carbon monocoque and bodywork, power unit / gearbox unit, active aerodynamics and push-rod suspension. With its complex technology the car offers even more than a Formula 1 single-seater.
Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, states: “With the Mercedes-AMG ONE we have done almost the impossible. The technical challenges of making a modern Formula 1 powertrain suitable for everyday use on the road have pushed the limits. After the development phase, many probably thought that the project would be impossible to carry out. Instead, the Affalterbach and UK teams have never stopped believing in it. This is why I have the utmost respect for all those who took part in the project and I am proud of their work ”.
The hybrid engine and the extreme power of the new Mercedes-AMG
The E PERFORMANCE hybrid drive of the Mercedes-AMG ONE comes from Formula 1 and was built in close cooperation with the experts from Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains from Brixworth. A hybrid internal combustion turbo engine and four electric motors have been joined together, in which all components are intelligently integrated and connected to each other.
The 1.6-liter petrol hybrid V6 with electrically supported single-turbo supercharging, it boasts the same technology as the current Formula 1 powertrain. The powertrain, centrally mounted in front of the rear axle, reaches 11,000 rpm. In order to last longer and to be able to use the Super plus petrol that we can normally find commercially available (instead of racing fuel), it remains – intentionally – below the maximum rpm allowed in Formula 1.
The high-revving engine (power is AMG’s calling card) is flanked by a hi-tech turbocharger, the exhaust gas turbine and the compressor turbine are separated and connected to each other by a shaft. This is how the turbocharger can be mounted lower. On this shaft is an approximately 90 kW electric motor that drives the turbocharger shaft, accelerating the compressor wheel to 100,000 rpm before exhaust gas flow takes over the drive. A true racing hypercar, which can be driven on the road.
