6 on the run, van Aert falls and risks a second blow
Cort Nielsen (Education EasyPost) immediately attacked in the pavé stage as well, who went on the run together with Boasson Hagen (TotalEnergies) and van der Hoorn (Intermarché-Wanty Gobert). The three are also joined by Powless, companion of Cort Nielsen, Simon Clarke (Israel PremierTech) and Gougeard (B / B Hotels). The group slips to 3 ‘and only 7th place remains for the sprint to the flying finish line, with Jakobsen beating van Aert in the sprint of Mérignies. The pavé has not yet begun, but van Aert has already had to overcome several ups and downs. First he ends up on the ground colliding with Kruijswijk, then in an attempt to find the group he risks ending up against the DSM flagship. Luckily he manages to rejoin the squad before the start of the first pavé sector.
Van der Poel and van Aert ko, Vingegaard punctures and remains delayed
The first pavé sector of the day begins and the fugitives maintain a 3 ‘advantage over the group. The Jumbo Visma are not waiting for van Aert, but Roglic is well placed, as is Pogacar who gets cobbled in the head being without teammates. Sagan ends up on the ground, in the meantime he immediately attacks Mads Pedersen once the first sector is finished, but the Dane is caught up within a few km. Up front they are strong, Roglic does not give up Pogacar, as do Geraint Thomas, Vlasov and Vingegaard in the top positions. Nothing to do instead for Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert who raise the white flag 38 km from the finish. The Dutchman arrived at this Tour with a deficient condition, the Belgian pays for the crash at the start of the stage. Jumbo Visma very unfortunate today with the puncture of Vingegaard which takes a lifetime to restart having to find a bike suitable for his measures.
Roglic on the ground: Tour already over? Pogacar attacks, then Clarke wins
To complete the bad day of the Jumbo Visma, Primoz Roglic crashed 29.5 km from the finish. The Slovenian had been perfect up to that moment, but ends up overwhelmed while crossing a roundabout: Küng hits the straw protections that weren’t exactly placed on the roadside, Caleb Ewan finishes there in full and generates a domino effect that knocks out also Roglic who was at his wheel.
Küng touches the guards and Ewan sends Roglic down: his Tour is over
The Slovenian is thus overtaken by the Vingegaard group and finds himself alone to recover. Here ends his Tour, with Roglic going over 2 ‘from Pogacar who, in the meantime, finds the strength to attack on the cobblestones, putting all the remaining big players in difficulty. The other Slovenian is a fury and goes off alone in search of the remaining fugitives with Stuyven. However, he will not be able to reunite with Boasson Hagen, Powless, Clarke and van der Hoorn to compete for the stage. Powless starts at -1.2 km, Boasson Hagen comes back, but in the end Clarke wins at the photo finish. At 51 ” Pogacar who does not gain so much from Vingegaard, who saves himself, losing only 13 ” thanks to the splendid work of van Aert who had made himself available. Who leaves the scene is Roglic who arrives at 2’08 ”.
