A wide and welcoming beach but, above all, clean; this is how the stretch of coast of the small Calabrian town of Roccella looks like hosted the Jova Beach Party on 12 and 13 August. To testify that the traveling event designed by Jovanotti actually it does not create that catastrophic environmental impact that many attribute the singer-songwriter is the mayor Vittorio Zito, who in the morning released a note in which he speaks of the JBP as an “extraordinary experience”.

In recent days it had been The cleaning of the beach is also documented with a videoin addition to the skeleton of the stage being dismantled, one could even see a man sifting the sand with a metal detector, intent on removing every last hint of human passage.

An operation that was successful to perfection, so much so that the mayor of Roccella has decided today to openly take the side of Jovanotti: “The beach, as the organization of the concert had guaranteed, has returned to free use, cleaner than it was before. The idea of having a party with 30,000 people on the coast is technically and administratively possible and does not conflict with any of the rules governing the use of the beach in our country “.

But not only that, Zito also takes the opportunity to respond to Professor Mario Tozzi, a geologist who a few days ago, through an open letter published in La Stampa, had invited Jovanotti to rethink his project, so that it did not become a habit to organize concerts unsustainable for the environment on our shores. Zito writes: “Like all the other Mayors colleagues, contrary to what Tozzi says, I would never have authorized the holding of the event in violation of the rules that protect the stretch of beach in question. Also, with all due respect, in the absence of the scientific advice of the WWF, which certainly serves to organize the concert to do things better, putting in place further actions than those required by law. But that does not represent a bulwark of legality against Mayors “who would have authorized the event in any case”. Give this idea of the Mayors as new Attila ready to devastate the territory is frankly old and inadmissible ”.

The mayor of Roccella then continues with the explanations: “It is beyond doubt that the JBP2022 certainly brings with it undeniable and indisputable advantages for the communities that host it, generating a very significant economic induced. And in terms of environmental sustainability, clarified once and for all that it does not take place in a protected area or of particular naturalistic interest and that no caretta caretta or fratino has nested on that beach in the last 20 years, the question is not whether the event modify the beach or not. The question – continues Zito – is whether these changes are such as to create irreversible impacts on the environment affected by the event. And the changes to the beach that the JBP2022 brings are obviously reversible ”.

But not only that, at this point the mayor Zito decides to “rescue” Jovanotti, violently accused on social media in recent weeks by those whom the singer-songwriter himself, in a video posted on Instagram, defined as “nazi-ecologists”: “Nothing, therefore, it prevents the event from being considered sustainable from an environmental point of view. Nothing but an ideological approach to the issue, exasperating which no sustainable development would be achieved, because the word development, according to this approach, would be dead, sacrificed to the exasperation of the concept of environmental sustainability ”.

Mayor Zito then concludes his note with the latest motivation that prompted him to host the Jova Beach Party and to be very satisfied with it: “Roccella is a small town of 6,400 souls in the Ionian Calabria. We have been Blue Flag for 20 years, we have had the 5 Sails of Legambiente recognized until this prestigious recognition has been attributed to the individual Municipalities and not to the districts, we have been for 10 years Green Flag for child-friendly beaches, we do 75% waste collection and our beaches are 70% free and 30% occupied by bathing establishments. I therefore believe that the ecological conscience of the community I represent can hardly be questioned. We are not a unique case – he continues – in a region that objectively suffers from the difficulty in unhinging the only dimension of its narrative, which is the judicial one. The JBP2022 is an extraordinary opportunity to do so, to tell and make known the Calabria that we are, to make all of us aware of the possibility of recovering from Cinderella’s syndrome and take our future in hand. We could have done it, as environmental associations suggest, with a Jovanotti concert held in a stadium or arena. But we should have organized it in Campania, because in Calabria there are no stadiums and arenas of this type ”. And he concludes: “The JBP2022 is a very well grounded heretical idea. And as history teaches us, it is on heretical ideas that the progress of a community is often built ”.
