The first illustrious death of volume 2 of the fourth season occurs in the eighth episode. Who dies? Not surviving is “Dad”, aka Dr. Brenner. After being riddled with bullets by Lieutenant Colonel Jack Sullivan’s military outside the bunker where Project Nina is located, Dr. Brenner dies as he tries to rescue Eleven.
The second major death can be traced towards the end of the ninth episode. It is Eddie Munson who does not survive: the metalhead and head of the Hellfire Club succumbs to the injuries sustained by the swarm of Demo-bats that are raging against him while he is luring them away from his friends. Eddie dies in Dustin’s arms. The latter makes sure to report to his uncle that Eddie sacrificed himself for the sake of Hawkins, the same town that considered him a monster.
Among the deaths of the ninth episode there is also that of Jason Carver, the head of the basketball team and boyfriend of Chrissy Cunningham. After traveling to the Creel house to take revenge on the Hellfire Club, Jason points the gun at Lucas and orders him to wake Max, who has since fallen into Vecna’s trance. After a violent fight, Lucas manages to get the better of Jason, who lies unconscious on the ground. When the four deaths of Vecna open the portal with the Upside Down, rending the town of Hawkins, the groove slices Jason’s body in two, killing him before Lucas’s eyes.
Finally, Max dies too. The young woman offered herself as bait to lure Vecna and allow her friends in the Upside Down to destroy the monster’s body, taking advantage of its distance. Although Eleven manages to free himself from the game of Number 001, she is unable to stop him in time: Max wakes up from the trance, but his conditions are desperate. Begging him not to let her go, Max dies in Lucas’s arms. Eleven is not ready to say goodbye to her friend: here is that Undi uses her powers to bring back to life Max. The latter, two days later, lies in a deep coma: the doctors do not explain how his heart has returned to beat after stopping for a minute. No one knows if Max will ever wake up, but on balance Max isn’t quite dead at the end of Season 4.
